Who Are We?

Covenant Presbyterian Church is a congregation of people of all ages and many different backgrounds. We are moderates, conservatives, and liberals who value Christian worship, fellowship, learning and service and the free exchange of ideas in friendly, Christ-centered relationships.

Our worship reflects deep traditional, Scriptural, and historical roots while giving birth to new expressions of joy and reverence to engage a contemporary community. Our music reflects the varied talents within the congregation and includes a booming pipe organ, piano, and occasional acoustic guitar, woodwind, strings and brass. The Covenant choir offers spirituals, classical, folk, and world music chosen to express the particular scriptural theme of each service.

Our educational program reflects our belief that Christians never stop learning. From nursery to children, to youth, to a variety of adult classes, our Sunday morning and weekday education programs include something for everyone, regardless of age.

Our service to others includes an annual mission trip to a place in need (hurricane relief, for example,) collaboration with local non-profits that provide food to the hungry, shelter for the homeless and people in substandard housing, and refuge for those escaping domestic violence.

This congregation is a member of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., (www.pcusa.org) the largest Presbyterian denomination in the United States. Through our denominational ties, we share in the ministry of other congregations and Christian mission workers all over the world. Through our regional ties to other Presbyterian congregations, (www.gracepresbytery.org) we share in a variety of ministry projects all over Northeast Texas and a five state area (www.synodsun.com).

Our children, youth, and college students join with hundreds of other Presbyterian youth for all kinds of events, some of them weekend worship, fellowship and learning and some week-long events of spiritual nurture and Christian service. We have a close relationship with Austin College in Sherman, a Presbyterian liberal arts college with a vigorous academic program.

Wednesday afternoons during the school year, children and youth enjoy W.O.W., (What’s On Wednesday) a ministry of fun, food, fellowship, homework help and Bible study led by Austin College students.

Covenant Presbyterian Church is a congregation formed from the merger of two congregations in December, 1995. The name “Covenant” was chosen to reflect

1) the relationship between God and us, the children of God;

2) the relationship between two congregations becoming one;

3) the relationship between each of us who seek to serve as disciples of Jesus Christ.
